What Are Weft Hair Extensions? (And Are They Right for You?)Updated 6 hours ago

Weft hair extensions are a popular and trusted method for adding length, fullness, and volume—without sacrificing the integrity of your natural hair. At SL Raw Virgin Hair, our wefts are made from 100% raw, ethically sourced human hair, sewn into a continuous strip (also known as a “track”) that can be applied using several different methods.

Types of Weft Hair Extensions

There are three primary types of weft hair:

1. Machine-Wefted Hair

2. Hand-Tied Wefts

3. Flat-Weft or Seamless Wefts

These modern wefts have a thinner base and are virtually undetectable, offering a more natural, lightweight feel.

How Are Wefts Installed?

Weft extensions are typically applied using the braid-down method (also known as a sew-in), where your natural hair is cornrowed and the weft is sewn along the braid using a curved needle and thread.

Other options include:

  • Microlink weft installs

  • Glue-in wefts (not recommended for raw hair)

  • Custom wig units made from wefts

Is This Method Right for You?

You may be a great candidate for weft hair extensions if:

  • You want fuller hair without excessive heat or chemical processing

  • You prefer a long-lasting install (wefts can last 6–8 weeks per install)

  • You want a protective style that supports natural hair growth underneath

  • You’re comfortable seeing a stylist for installation and takedown
