How to Prep Your Curly Microlinks Before Install?Updated 12 hours ago

Installing curly I-Tip extensions? Prepping them properly before installation is key to preventing tangles, frizz, and unnecessary shedding.

Because SL Raw I-Tips are made from 100% virgin human hair, they require specific handling to preserve their texture, softness, and longevity. Below, we show you exactly how to prep them—including a step-by-step video walkthrough.

What You’ll Need

  • Wide-tooth comb

  • Sulfate-free shampoo

  • Moisturizing conditioner

  • Spray bottle with water

  • Leave-in conditioner or curl cream

  • Towel or microfiber cloth

  • Styling clips

Step-by-Step: Prep Curly Microlinks the Right Way

Step 1: Gently Detangle with Moisture

Remove from packaging. Lightly mist the bundles with water and use your fingers to gently separate any curls that may be clumped together from storage. Do not comb or brush dry.

Step 2: Cleanse with Sulfate-Free Shampoo

Use lukewarm water and a moisturizing shampoo. Clean the hair in a downward motion, avoiding scrubbing or circular motions that can cause matting.

Step 3: Deep Condition

Apply conditioner generously and let it sit for 5–10 minutes. Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to detangle while the hair is saturated with conditioner.

Step 4: Rinse + Air Dry

Rinse thoroughly with cool water to close the cuticle. Gently squeeze out excess water with a microfiber towel or T-shirt (not a bath towel), then lay flat or hang to air dry.

Step 5: Define the Curl Pattern

Apply a small amount of curl cream or spray leave-in conditioner. Use the raking method or shingling technique to enhance the natural curl pattern.

Why This Matters

Virgin curly hair is completely unprocessed, meaning each strand behaves like real human hair. Proper prep ensures:

  • Fewer tangles during installation

  • Easier sectioning for your stylist

  • Defined curls that blend naturally

  • Less shedding and matting over time

Pro Tips from Our Texture Experts

  • Never pull curls apart while dry—this causes frizz and breakage.

  • Always detangle while wet and conditioned.

  • Let curls dry in their natural shape before installing to avoid knots.
