How Many Hair Bundles or Packs Do I Need?Updated 12 hours ago

The number of hair bundles or packs you’ll need depends on three key factors:

  1. The texture of the hair,

  2. The length you’re ordering, and

  3. Your desired fullness, natural density, and installation method.

We created this guide to help you confidently plan your install — whether you’re booking a sew-in, making a wig, ordering weft bundles for your stylist, or comparing how many I-Tip, Seamless I-Tip, or K-Tip packs you may need.

Quick Answer: How Much Hair Do You Need?

Here is a simple starting point based on the extension method you are considering:

Extension MethodCommon Starting PointBest For
Weft Bundles / Sew-Ins2–4 bundles depending on length and fullnessTraditional sew-ins, wigs, and fuller installs
I-Tips / MicrolinksUsually 3–4 packs for a natural full installNatural movement, strand-by-strand installs, and flexible styling
Seamless I-TipsUsually 4–5 packs depending on density and desired fullnessFine, lower-density, or discreet microlink installs
K-Tips / Keratin BondsUsually 5–6 packs for a natural full installLong-wear, professional strand-by-strand installs

Tip: These are general starting points. Your stylist may recommend more or less depending on your head size, haircut, leave-out, density, and the final look you want.

Quick Guide by Texture + Length for Weft Bundles

For sew-ins, custom wigs, and weft installs, texture and length make a big difference. Longer hair often has shorter weft width, which means you may need more bundles to create the same fullness.

For Straight, Wavy, Loose Curly, and Similar Textures

LengthRecommended Bundles
12–14 inches2+ bundles
16–18 inches3+ bundles
20–24 inches3+ bundles
26–28 inches4+ bundles

For Kinky Curly, Burmese Curly, Kinky Straight, and Fuller Textures

LengthRecommended Bundles
12–14 inches2+ bundles
16–18 inches2-3 bundles
20–24 inches3-4 bundles
26 inches & up4+ bundles

Note: Fuller textures may appear more voluminous with fewer bundles, while longer lengths often need extra hair to keep the ends full.

How Many I-Tip, Seamless I-Tip, or K-Tip Packs Do You Need?

Strand-by-strand installs are planned by packs instead of traditional weft bundles. Your stylist will usually consider your natural density, head size, parting area, and desired fullness before deciding the final amount.

Install TypeNatural FullnessExtra Fullness or Longer Lengths
I-Tips / Microlinks4 packs5–6 packs
Seamless I-Tips5 packs6–7 packs
K-Tips / Keratin Bonds7 packs8–10 packs

Professional Tip: If you are between amounts, it is usually better to order slightly more than not enough. Running short can limit fullness, blending, and the final shape of the install.

Extra Considerations for Custom Looks

  • Adding a closure or frontal?
Most customers still purchase 2–3 bundles for a natural look with a lace closure or frontal.

  • Using layered lengths, such as 18”, 20”, and 22”?
You may get more movement and fullness with 3–4 bundles.

  • Want a fuller look from root to ends?
Choose the higher recommendation, especially for longer lengths or fuller textures.

  • Have fine or lower-density hair?
You may not need as much hair, but you should still choose enough to blend naturally without creating tension.
