What’s the Difference Between Fusion & Microlinks? (Updated for Today’s Hair Methods)Updated 2 hours ago

If you're exploring long-term hair extension options and find yourself torn between microlinks and fusion extensions, you're not alone. Both methods are discreet, semi-permanent, and allow for movement and styling flexibility — but they work very differently.

Let’s break it down so you can make the best choice based on your hair type, lifestyle, and desired outcome.

What Are Microlink Extensions?

Microlinks — also known as I-Tip installations — involve attaching small sections of pre-tipped I-tip hair using tiny, lightweight beads (also called microbeads or micro rings). There’s no glue, no heat, and no braiding.

Best For:

  • Clients with healthy, medium to thick natural hair

  • Those who want minimal tension

  • Active lifestyles — gym, sweat, ponytails, etc.

At SL Raw Virgin Hair, we offer:

Tip: These are reusable, lightweight, and perfect for clients who want a longer-lasting install without commitment to glue or bonds.

What Are Fusion Extensions?

Fusion extensions (sometimes called hot fusion or pre-bonded U-tip extensions) use keratin-based adhesive to bond hair strands to your natural hair using heat. They offer a smooth, blended appearance — and they’re very secure.

Best For:

  • Clients with medium to coarse hair

  • Long-term installs (3–5 months)

  • Sleek, polished styles with minimal re-dressing

We now offer Organic Keratin Bond Tips — made with a clean, flexible keratin formula that won’t leave sticky residue and preserves the integrity of your natural hair.

Note: These extensions must be applied and removed by a licensed professional using precision tools.

Care Tips for Both Methods

  • Avoid oil-based products near the roots

  • Detangle gently with a loop brush or wide-tooth comb

  • Sleep in a satin bonnet or on a silk pillowcase

  • Don’t skip salon maintenance — microlinks may slip, and fusions can break with neglect
